What to expect
Africa's Iconic Eagle
Watching an African fish eagle launch from the riverside trees and sweep down across the water is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences the Upper Zambezi has to offer. Our Fish Eagle Feeding Encounter gives guests the rare opportunity to witness this incredible moment from just metres away as one of Africa’s most powerful and recognizable birds spots a floating tigerfish and descends in a dramatic display of speed, precision, and strength. With their unmistakable call echoing across the river and their huge wings cutting through the air, fish eagles are a defining symbol of the Zambezi, and seeing one strike the water at close range is something few people ever forget. During certain outings, our guides may use a small tigerfish attached to a natural reed so it floats naturally on the surface, allowing perched fish eagles to spot an easy meal as the boat drifts nearby. The result is an extraordinary photographic and wildlife viewing opportunity that offers guests a closer appreciation of these magnificent birds and their role within the river ecosystem. While the experience is unforgettable, it is approached thoughtfully and carefully, always with respect for the wild nature of the river and the animals that call it home.
Our Stand
Conservation
At Mutemwa, our love for the Zambezi and its wildlife shapes everything we do. Fishing is approached with deep respect and responsibility, and is conducted primarily on a strict catch-and-release basis to protect the river’s tigerfish population. On the rare occasion that a fish cannot recover after a fight, it may be returned naturally to the ecosystem through a fish eagle feeding encounter — ensuring nothing is wasted and the cycle of nature continues. These encounters are carried out sparingly and with great care, ensuring we do not interfere with the natural behaviour or create any dependency for the fish eagles, who remain fully wild and self-sufficient.
