Just a short journey from the lodge, the Njoko River offers one of the most peaceful and visually striking excursions in the Mutemwa experience. This small tributary of the Zambezi joins the main river just a couple of kilometres downstream on the opposite bank, and feels like a completely separate world the moment you enter its channel. Here the water runs clear and still, edged with dense reed beds, floating lilies, and quiet overhanging vegetation that attracts an abundance of birdlife throughout the day. Kingfishers flash between the reeds, herons and storks move silently through the shallows, and the stillness is often broken only by the call of distant fish eagles. Guests are welcomed aboard with a cooler box stocked with ice-cold drinks, before the boat gently motors upstream into the narrowing, increasingly intimate channels of the Njoko. As the river becomes too narrow to continue, the boat slowly turns and begins its unhurried drift back downstream — just as the light softens into the golden stage of the day. With a drink in hand, guests can simply sit back and take in the shifting colours of the water, the reflections of the reeds, and the quiet beauty of the Zambezi at sunset, as the entire experience settles into a calm, unhurried rhythm that captures the essence of river life at Mutemwa.
