About

Enjoy the best of both worlds on our all-time favourite safari. This unforgettable adventure takes you from the comfort of Mutemwa Lodge to the raw natural beauty of the Ngonye Falls — and everything in between. Fish your way upriver and back again, spend two nights under the stars at our Ngonye Falls Beach Camp, and feel your reel scream with the catch of a lifetime.

Here’s what to expect from the Ngonye Falls Safari:

  • Your adventure begins with two nights at Mutemwa Lodge, where you’ll fish the legendary Zambezi River right from the lodge’s doorstep, while enjoying the comfort, luxury, and tranquility of our beautiful surroundings.
  • On day three, your journey upriver begins. Fishing from the lodge all the way to Ngonye Falls National Park—an 80km stretch—you’ll target the Zambezi’s prime fishing spots, guided by our expert team who know every secret of these waters. Along the way, enjoy lunch and ice-cold drinks, with our boats fully equipped for your comfort.
  • At Ngonye Falls, you’ll spend two unforgettable nights camping on the white sand beaches, sleeping in comfortable bow tents, dining under the stars, and gathering around a crackling beach fire.
  • You’ll fish the gorge below Ngonye Falls—the second largest waterfall on the Zambezi—where deep waters and powerful rapids create the perfect hunting grounds for monster tigerfish. This is your chance to land your biggest tiger yet! Between casts, take time to explore the spectacular Falls and cool off with a refreshing swim!
  • Your return leg sees you fishing downstream all the way back to Mutemwa, culminating in a final evening of relaxation. On your day of departure, squeeze in one last early morning session before breakfast, making every moment count.

Camping in the Park

This Safari takes you between our premiere Mutemwa Lodge and our Ngonye Falls Beach Camp.

Liuwa Park Camp:

  • Spacious 3x3m bow tents
  • Camp ablutions and amenities

Liuwa Plains National Park

Mutemwa Lodge is nestled along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River in Western Zambia, one of Africa’s most iconic waterways. This river forms the heartbeat of the region, and has captivated us for over 30 years.

Our Ngonye Falls Camp sits on a pristine white sand beach within the Ngonye Falls National Park, home to the spectacular Ngonye Falls. Located approximately 80km upriver from the lodge, the camp offers an intimate connection with nature, where the roar of the falls, the beauty of the river, and the surrounding wilderness create an unforgettable safari experience.

Wildlife

Park information

The Ngonye Falls Safari offers access to a vast, virtually private stretch of the Zambezi River, with 30km between the top and bottom rapids of Mutemwa Lodge providing more than enough water to explore in the first two days, and a further 50km upstream towards the falls where rocky structure and fast-flowing channels create prime habitat for big, hunting tigerfish. The diversity of deep pools, sandbanks, rapids, and oxygen-rich water makes this section both powerful and highly productive, with most groups landing multiple fish over 12lbs in one of the most scenic and rewarding fisheries in Western Zambia.

Migration

The undisputed highlight here is the African Tigerfish, renowned for its explosive strikes and unstoppable runs. These waters are also home to a population of a variety of bream species, including Yellow Belly Bream (Nembwe), as well as with others that provide exciting lighter-tackle action in the calmer channels and lagoons.
