Flood Season at Mutemwa Lodge
The annual Zambezi River flood is a critical ecosystem phenomenon that brings a crucial change to the rivers structure, aquatic life and vegetation. The flood also attracts spectacular birdlife and allows fish populations the chance to escape the fast flowing river into backwaters in order to breed. All in all it is a very important time of year and it never ceases to amaze us when you see the 1km stretch of river rise by over 5 meters and flow consistently for days at that level – the sheer amount of water is just spectacular!
And this year (2026) it did not disappoint. Arriving at the earliest time we’ve witnessed in many years, the river reached its highest point towards the end of March. Historically the river normally rises until the first week of May and then begins to drop as the flood waters recede back into the river, reaching a sort of equilibrium by the end of May and then slowing continuing to drop as the year goes by until the rainy season begins in and around December, and the cycle continues.
For those of you who have enjoyed a walk along the road or bush trails at Mutemwa, you may recall what is known as the Mutemwa Dip. The dip is a main flood channel behind the lodge that typically fills up every year. This year the Dip went from bone-dry to overflowing onto the road on either side in just 3 days!!
The Mutemwa deck, well known as the breakfast/brunch spot, disappeared beneath the river, the water coming just below the balustrading at its highest point.
A small walk behind the lodge could have seen you walking in knee-deep water amongst schools of fish swimming along our entrance road. Thankfully no flatdogs were spotted on these walks but its guaranteed they were around…
And for a time, Mutemwa Lodge even became an island—accessible only by boat.
A Hidden Season for Birding
While the river expands, so does the birdlife.
The flooded backwaters open up entirely new habitats—quiet channels, lagoons, and reed-lined edges that attract an incredible variety of species.
For those interested in birding on the Upper Zambezi, this is one of the most rewarding times to visit. Every turn reveals something new.
