On the Banks of the Kwando
Mutemwa Lodge is nestled along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River in Western Zambia, one of Africa’s most iconic waterways. This river forms the heartbeat of the region, and has captivated us for over 30 years.
Our Ngonye Falls Camp sits on a pristine white sand beach within the Ngonye Falls National Park, home to the spectacular Ngonye Falls. Located approximately 80km upriver from the lodge, the camp offers an intimate connection with nature, where the roar of the falls, the beauty of the river, and the surrounding wilderness create an unforgettable safari experience.

Fishing
River Information
The Shangombo Safari is fished on a northern stretch of the Kwando River, a narrower, structure-rich system that offers a more technical and intimate angling experience than the Zambezi. Flowing along the Zambia–Angola border before turning into Angola, this remote stretch remains lightly pressured, with special permission allowing us to fish both Zambian and pristine, uncharted Angolan waters.
Tight channels, submerged timber, and quiet lagoons create ideal ambush points for predatory fish, rewarding accurate casting and methodical water coverage. For anglers seeking exploration and consistent action in a secluded setting, the Kwando provides a unique and highly rewarding fishery.
Species
The primary target is the African Tigerfish, thriving in the Kwando’s structure-heavy channels where explosive strikes often come from beneath overhanging banks and submerged cover. The river also supports strong populations of bream species, including Yellow Belly Bream (Nembwe), which provide exciting lighter-tackle action in calmer lagoons and backwaters.
Tackle Recommendations
The Kwando’s tighter channels and structure reward precision and versatility. Proven options in the past have included copper spoons and Afrijigs but anything is possible here.
A variety of Afrijigs are available for purchase in camp (while stock lasts).
