About

The Kwando Traverse is a pioneering fishing expedition designed for anglers who crave true exploration and waters untouched by modern pressure. This six-night journey follows the wild course of the Kwando River from Shangombo to Silundu, traversing more than 250 km of remote river where few — if any — lines have ever been cast. In an era where truly unfished waters are almost impossible to find, the Kwando Traverse offers a rare return to raw, pioneering angling.

Each day, guests fish their way downstream through an ever-changing landscape of channels, reed-lined banks, deep pools, and winding bends. As you progress, you will either set up your own mobile camp with the supplies you have onboard or be met by a dedicated support team who moves ahead by road to establish a comfortable camp at the next overnight stop. Either way evenings are spent around the fire under vast African skies, sharing stories from the day’s discoveries and preparing for the next stretch of unexplored water.

Limited to just one departure per year, the Kwando Traverse is not simply a fishing trip — it is a landmark journey for those who want to be among a handful of people to explore and fish one of Southern Africa’s last truly wild river frontiers.

The Journey

Day 1 – Arrival in Shangombo
Arrive via charter flight from Livingstone and settle into Shangombo camp on Zambians northern-most stretch of the Kwando River, preparing for the expedition ahead with a briefing, tackle setup, and an evening beside the river.

Day 2 – Into the Wild (Mobile Camp)
The traverse begins as you fish downstream through untouched water, ending as daylight fades, setting up your own remote mobile camp on a beach wherever suits you –  your on your own in the wild.

Day 3 – Deeper into Untouched Territory (Mobile Camp)
After day 2 you’ll really be entering untouched territory fishing past the furtherest point we can go from our Shangombo Camp in one day. Overnight at a second fully mobile riverside camp.

Day 4 – Remote Comfort (Temporary Camp)
After another full day on the water, arrive at a temporary support camp accessible by road, featuring proper tents, ablutions, and a central campfire area for a more comfortable night in the wilderness.

Day 5 – Arrival at Sinjembela Camp
Continue along remote Kwando style fishing your way into the established Sinjembela Camp, where a permanent setup offers a relaxed evening and a chance to recharge before the final stretch.

Day 6 – Final Push to Silundu
The last leg delivers more prime, unexplored water as you make your way toward journey’s end, arriving at Silundu for a celebratory final night.

Day 7 – Departure
Depart Silundu at dawn  carrying with you the distinction of having completed one of Africa’s most exclusive river traverses.

On the Banks of the Kwando

The Kwando Traverse unfolds along a remote stretch of the Kwando River, between Shangombo and Silundu. Unlike the southern reaches of the river in Namibia, this entire section remains untouched by any other operators or tourism activity, offering a level of exclusivity and solitude that is almost impossible to find today.

Flowing through an expansive floodplain, the river frequently leaves solid ground behind, winding through channels and wetlands far removed from roads or human access. This shifting landscape forms the natural boundary between Angola and Zambia, and enhances the sense of true remoteness, immersing guests in a pristine wilderness where wildlife thrives. Hippos and crocodiles — the river’s longtime residents — are abundant throughout the system, adding to the authenticity of the experience and a genuine element of challenge and respect for safety that guests must remain mindful of at all times.

Fishing

The Kwando Traverse offers a rare opportunity to fish an untouched stretch of the Kwando River, where diverse structure, minimal pressure, and vast floodplain systems create ideal conditions for predator fish.

With no established angling pressure along this stretch, fish are expected to be aggressive and responsive, rewarding both conventional techniques and exploratory approaches. The traverse format will allow anglers to cover vast water daily, targeting new structure and holding water that few, if any, have ever fished before.

River Characteristics

  • Water Type: Floodplain river with multiple channels, backwaters, and seasonal lagoons
  • Structure: Reed beds, fallen trees, sandbanks, undercut banks, deep pools, and slow back-eddies
  • Flow: Moderate current with faster runs in narrowed channels and outside bends
  • Visibility: Typically tea-stained to clear, depending on floodplain inflow

Target Species

  • Tigerfish – The primary target; aggressive and hard-fighting in these unpressured waters
  • Nembwe (Yellow Belly Bream) – Found around structure and slower margins
  • Three-spot Bream
  • Barbel (Catfish)

Recommended Tackle

  • Afrijigs
  • Spoons and spinners
  • Small Rapalas

Important Notes

  • Expect highly aggressive strikes due to minimal fishing pressure.
  • Structure-rich environments increase the risk of snags — carry ample terminal tackle.
  • Wildlife presence, including hippos and crocodiles, requires constant awareness and adherence to guide instructions.

The Kwando Traverse is as much about discovery as it is about fishing — a chance to read untouched water, adapt to changing conditions, and experience predator fishing in one of Southern Africa’s last truly wild river systems.

(Afrijigs and Rapalas are available for purchase in camp (while stock lasts).
